Hard plastic, not rubber. Set screw is Allen with large pad, holds the 0/1 gauge in place very well. Plastic retaining screw seats below the plastic so the chance of touching it is very minimal, and isn't even an issue unless you're also holding the ground which would be stupid. I'm using these to connect a 12v+ line from my battery bank to the inverter in my travel trailer. The cable connector took the 0/1 welding cable with no issues. I just cut the cable, stripped the insulation, twisted the exposed cable, and inserted it into the connector. The Allen head retainer screwed down and secured the cable perfectly. This is going to work perfectly for connecting the two ends of the cable together.

Used for 200 amp DC power supply quick connectors. Please bring back asap so i can order 6 more! FYI if u call your self a welder and have never gotten shocked when welding or u are afraid to be u are not a welder... If using with dc they are perfectly safe. Just as safe as any stick electrode holder. Flick the sand out u poose!

I bought this connector set because it appears to be identical to the welding cable plugs on my ancient Forney welder. I will be sending it back. Here's why:Firstly, the photo shows a pair of black and red connectors, but the description says "red." The description is correct. The photo is misleading. You will receive one red male and one red female connector.Secondly, while this item appears to be a copy of the original Forney plugs, right down to the part number molded into the plastic handles, it is a cheap copy. A bad copy as well, because the male plug does not have the taper used by Forney and is too large to even be plugged into the welder.Thirdly, the cable clamp setscrews do not line up with the holes in the plastic handles, and even worse, the screw holding the handle on to the brass body protrudes out of the handle so far you are guaranteed to get a nasty shock just by handling the connector under power.I agree with "A Customer" above. This item is an unuseable knockoff and potentially dangerous to boot.

Good quality. Five dollars cheaper than competitors.

Simple to connect and decent quality. The "exposed" screw that some reviewers decry actually recesses inside the housing 1/8" when you screw it in all the way (it arrives flush, since you must remove it to secure the cable). For the voltages these operate at, this isn't a problem. It is easy to put some electrical tape over it too.
