Works with Coffee and Brewed Cacao-Alleviates Primary Aeropress Design Flaw

I was excited to receive my Aeropress as a gift and more than disappointed when I found out how much of the liquid leaks out before you express it into a cup. Aeropress has a major design flaw that they want you to pay $25 to mitigate. These filters slow down the flow significantly so you can actually allow the fluid to remain in order to brew your cup before it all drains out into your cup (see attached photos). I am using it for ground coffee and for roasted cacao. Very useful for both. Some folks use these metal filters along with a paper filter to further slow the "LEAK" from the Aeropress device. I am happy with just the metal filter.

Maximum extraction, portable, easy to use.

AeroPress is a great device for home, camping, and travel, and paper filters are convenient, cheap, and just fine. They do, however, absorb some of the coffee oils that otherwise produce a fuller, more flavorful cup of coffee for those looking for the ultimate extraction of flavor from their beans. In comes the CAFE CONCETTO - Disc Superfine - Reusable - Premium Coated Stainless Steel Permanent filter.Using it as I would the paper filter, I get the added punch of the coffee oils. Not everyone will notice the difference, and the paper filters work just fine. For travel, this reusable filter that comes in a carboard sleeve is much more compact than taking a stack of paper filters.Three minor down sides: instead of popping a coffee "puck" into the trash, you have to remove the filter; instead of disposing of a paper filter with the puck, you have to remove coffee grounds that will stick to it; and you have to wash the filter. To wash it, I fill the AeroPress with hot water, install the filter in backwards (printing and bigger holes facing away from the coffee chamber, into the direction of the cup), and push the plunger to force the hot water through the holes in the filter. You can add a spot of dish soap to the wash water for more effective cleaning. When dry, do hold the filter up to the light to make sure none of the holes are plugged. The filter comes with directions for use, including the use of the "inverse" technique that involved pulling the plunger almost out of the brewing tube/chamber with the filter unit off, putting coffee into the brewing chamber while the press is upside down, adding hot water to the chamber (making the contraption top-heavy), stirring 10 seconds, and letting it stand for two minutes before placing the filter and filter unit onto the unit, inverting it on a cup, and pushing the plunger to extract the coffee. I find this method to be precarious if not dangerous, unnecessary, and with no improvement in the results.I follow the AeroPress method. I put on the filter onto the brewing chamber/tube, place it on my cup, add a heaping scoop (that comes with the press) to the chamber, add hot water at my desired temperature (175F) up to the "2" marking in the chamber, stir 10 times/seconds, add the plunger, and press/extract coffee into my cup. If I want espresso, I drink the extraction as is, with no additional water. If I want regular but full bodied cup of coffee, I add another 6 oz. of hot water for a great café Americano.

A Great Cup of Coffee

I've used an Aeropress with paper filters for years and have enjoyed it. When using paper filters I always would double up and use 2 filters in the cap. When it came time to buy more paper filters I found this permanent one and decided to give it a try. I like my coffee a little on the "chewy" side and I really enjoy the robustness of French press coffee so I didn't hesitate to try the "Superfine" Concetto filter and so far I have been pleasantly surprised with it. This thing makes a nice, very clean, cup of coffee. It actually makes a cleaner cup with less sediment in my cup than when I was using 2 paper filters in my Aeropress. Because of this I am going to get the "Fine" filter and try that out as well. Using the filter is almost the same as paper. Just insert it into the cap, wet with a little water to hold it in place, and proceed as normal. There is definitely push pressure resistance there when depressing the plunger but it is similar to when I was using 2 paper filters. Just take a minute, apply even, steady pressure and it works great. The only difference is that when you are done you have to fish the filter out of your press and rinse it clean and set it aside to dry rather than just throwing it in the garbage. A little brushing helps to keep all the little holes unclogged, if you hold the filter up to sunlight you can see if the holes are clear or not. So I very much like this filter and am glad that I purchased it as it works very well and makes a great cup of coffee.UPDATE: I also have purchased the "fine" filter (see pic of residue left in my cup by the "fine" filter). This makes an excellent cup of coffee that is more "chewy" and what I am used to with a French press. I actually like and will use both filters and I am very glad to be using these instead of paper filters for my Aeropress. These turned out to be an excellent purchase and I am very satisfied with the results.

Just ok

I like that I’m not going through so many paper filters, but I prefer the flavor of my coffee with a paper filter. The coffee now has more sediment no matter how fine or coarse I grind, as well as a more acidic kick to it. I don’t regret the purchase, but I’ll probably go back to paper and just use these as a backup or something.
