Solid Series to Complete 3rd Grade Book reports

Great read for 3rd grade readers. Can be read alone or aloud. This story deals with the Joplin Tornadoes in a very neutral and child friendly way, yet without sugar coating anything. I read it to my 3rd grade son. He is a sensitive kid and doesn't like Goosebumps stories, so I was a little worried that this might scare him and we'd be having bedtime problems. It did not. He was not scared and asked a lot of questions.Appropriate content for 2nd graders, too if their reading level is there. We have had a lot of luck with the "I Survived" chapter books during the 3rd grade year. It's a solid go-to series to knock out those book reports.

It is a good read, especially for the kids

This was well written, and well researched. We live in Galena, mentioned in the book, and spent countless hours doing clean-up and mission work after the storm. The only things I noted was that the author referred to Joplin as being in Southeast Missouri, when actually it is Southwest; and secondly, she referenced CVS Pharmacy, though it did not come to Joplin until sometime after the tornado. It is a good read, especially for the kids. The subject was a sensitive one, especially after seeing the trauma first hand, and she did a great job being realistic, but keeping it on a level appropriate for kids.

A Gripping Tale of Courage and Resilience Amidst Nature's Fury

I Survived the Joplin Tornado, 2011 is an emotionally charged and captivating book that offers a glimpse into the devastating reality of one of the deadliest tornadoes in American history. As the twelfth installment in the "I Survived" series, Lauren Tarshis delivers another remarkable story of survival against all odds. The narrative centers around twelve-year-old Dex, who finds himself caught in the midst of the violent EF5 tornado that tore through Joplin, Missouri. The author beautifully captures the chaos, fear, and confusion that engulfed the town, making readers feel as though they are right there with Dex, experiencing the terror firsthand.Tarshis skillfully weaves together Dex's personal journey with historical facts about the tornado, providing an educational yet engaging experience for young readers. The book explores the devastating impact on families, the community's response to the disaster, and the long road to recovery. It is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of individuals in the face of unimaginable adversity. The characters in this story are well-developed, and their emotions are vividly portrayed, allowing readers to empathize with their struggles. Dex's determination to find his parents amidst the chaos is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. The supporting characters, such as Abby and Mr. Owens, add depth to the narrative and highlight the importance of compassion and helping one another during times of crisis. One aspect that could have been improved upon is the pacing of the story. At times, it felt rushed, especially during the climax of the tornado. A slower pace would have allowed for a more intense build-up and further exploration of the aftermath. Additionally, the book occasionally brushes over the emotional trauma experienced by the characters, which could have been delved into more deeply.Despite these minor flaws, I Survived the Joplin Tornado, 2011 is a gripping and thought-provoking read. It not only educates young readers about a significant historical event but also emphasizes the importance of resilience, compassion, and community during times of crisis. This book is an excellent addition to the "I Survived" series and will undoubtedly leave readers with a newfound appreciation for the power of nature and the strength of the human spirit.

This is a good book

To the ages of 8 and 12 years old this book is very good to read and all of the "I Survived" Books are all based on true event. What I think readers would enjoy from this book is the Survival and how the Main Character Narrates the whole story.I enjoyed the book because I like it how the Main character narrates the whole disaster and his way of Explaining the tornado. After I read this book I felt sad for the city of Joplin And what people went through and how every town has to go through after a tornado.

Great for 8 year olds!

My 8 year old son (Third grade) loves these books. He is a gifted child and reads on a 6th grade level and these are easy for him to read. He likes non-fiction and a bit of drama and these are perfect. They're also a couple dollars cheaper on Amazon than at my local store!

¡Tornados!
