Well constructed. Not for every style of music
This is the so-called "Yamaha" style wood hoop. It's exceptionally well constructed and heavy with a flat top. I'll compare to other wood hoop types at the end of the review. There is a lot of wood surface in this hoop, so if your music calls for cross-stick playing or rimshots this hoop would be ideal. This is also the style that causes the greatest loss of sensitivity as you play closer to the edge of the head. If you play heavy backbeat music, this loss probably won't be noticed, but if you are playing any kind of music that requires nuance such as second line drumming, or sensitivity down at the PPP level, this hoop probably won't fit your style.Other types of wood hoops to consider are the shaped and the hide-a-head types, each of which is shown in customer-supplied images at the top of this page. Moreover, each wood hoop type has different characteristics, and the reason I am discussing them is to compare all of the wood hoop types to assist in selecting the one right for you. Or making sure wood hoops will even meet your requirements. The Hide-A-Head hoop gives drums a warmth while not significantly hampering sensitivity or shell resonance. However, you will need to consider that your lugs need spacers to work with mini-claws that are used to hold the hoops in place. And you will almost always need longer tension rods. These equal extra expense.Shaped heads (shown in customer-supplied photos above) are a compromise. You still have lots of wood and tone, but you gain back a modicum of sensitivity.Overall, if you want to change your sound wood hoops are a great way to do it. This style does not require extra lug spacers, claws or different tension rods, so swapping it on or off for a specific gig or recording session is relatively easy, making it a decent choice. That is, if you are OK with the trade-offs I mentioned at the beginning of this review.
