The Old Testament: Made Amazingly Simple

I think this is a great resource for anyone who wishes to learn or brush up on the Old Testament. The guide in Cliff Notes fashion you along the way as you take in the many wonderful tales from the Old Testament. As someone who can attest to the fact of the Old Testament being quite abstruse and hard to understand for the uninitiated, I thought that the format in which the stories are presented in short bits can help You learn quickly and enjoyably. The minimalistic and artful illustrations add a nice punch to this book. I’m considering using this as a guide for me to teach my nephews the Old Testament. It’s also easy enough for brighter younger students to enjoy on their own. All in all a great book that helps others to see the glory of God in his ancient tales and miracles.

As a pastor, I thought this resource was easy to use, well put together, and gave a quick overview of each book of the OT. It wasn't too stuffy or complex and contained notable verses and stories to help keep readers interest as they surveyed the OT. After spending the weekend at the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter, I could see this book giving great value and insight to people who are reenergized to discover the complexity and beauty of God's word. I highly recommend this. My wife and I are going to go through it with our 3 homeschooled children. :) The simple drawings and images complemented the text without distracting from it.

The concept and format is good because it tries to summarize the main topic if the book of the Old Testament. But the inaccuracy of some of the content is misleading and confusing. For example, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy belong to one single volume: the Torah. How could, then, Genesis and Exodus be written in different eras? The authors claim Exodus to be written around 600 BC which is false. Also, the summary of each book lacks wisdom to connect the story of each book to the main storyline of God’s redemption in Christ. Finally, the inclusion of quotes from Teresa de Avila or Thomas a Kempis seem out of context besides the fact that those authors are not representative of biblical theology.

I like these books but I was expecting more info than what is actually in each chapter.

My goal for 2021 is to read through the entire Bible for the first time and right now I'm in the Old Testament. It can be daunting going through some of these books without fully understanding the context or history, along with the background of the author. I have really appreciated the insight this book provides to help me stay focused on the main points of each book and understand more about the history going on while they were being written. I think this would be a good resource for older children and of course for adults as well. I was pleasantly surprised to find the prayers scattered throughout the book - they really spoke to me and my family and encouraged us.

As a Christian, I believe that the Old Testament is very important for us to read and understand in order to know more about who our Father is. I found this book when I was reading through Jeremiah and Isaiah and understanding nothing. Since I've gotten it, however, things have become much clearer to me. It is definitely a great resource that is simple, quick and enjoyable. The illustrations are a playful touch and they aren't too flashy or distracting. It is very easy to use, and not at all pretentious or complex. I love it.
