Looks Good, But How Does It Compare To Swell?
Anytime a new, um, imitation of a popular product comes out at a much lower price, it's obviously very tempting to pick one up. But you're always left wondering how good it is, whether there's a reason it's so much cheaper, and if any other off-brand products are just as good. So I did a semi-scientific test of 3 of the most popular choices, so you can know for sure. The name brand bottle is S'well ( Swell 17 Ounce Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle ), and it runs about $40. These bottles cost about 1/3 to 1/4 of that. I honestly wasn't expecting it to be any contest. Turns out I was wrong.Bottles Tested: Swell 17 Ounce Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle - $42 HappyGo Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Bottle - $17 ZMG Cola Shaped Stainless Steel Double Wall Vacuum Bottle (Silver, 17oz/500ml) - $14 Swig Savvy 17oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle (Blue, 17oz) - $10The short version of the results:All 3 off-brand bottles did just as well in the test as the name-brand Swell. They kept the liquid in them every bit as cold as the Swell did, for 8 hours on a hot Southern summer day. I'll provide more details below for those who are interested. As far as I can tell, all 4 of these bottles may well have come out of the same factory. There's a slight (1/4") height difference among them, but that's the only dimensional difference. In fact, the tops are interchangeable between every single bottle.Final thoughts on the three off-brands:- The HappyGo is the most expensive. Its design is almost identical to the others, but many of the corners are a little more rounded, which I like. You can clearly see this difference when comparing pictures of each. Its logo is small and unobtrusive, in a coordinating color at the bottom of the bottle, like Swell’s.- The ZMG is the middle -priced, and most unassumingly designed. No logo, slightly sharper corners. It’s slightly more industrial-looking than the HappyGo, in my mind. Note that the pictures for the ZMG differ slightly on Amazon – the bottle I got looks most like the first picture, which shows 5 different colors.- The Swig Savvy is the cheapest of the 3 knock-offs. It also has a coating on it (which I don’t love the texture of, and prevents you from getting a more scratch-proof metal finish), but I believe that coating is what helped it to perform the best out of all 4 bottles in the test. It does lose out on one point, though: the logo. The logo is large, in your face, and in the center of the bottle. If the name brand puts their logo inconspicuously at the bottom of the bottle, why in the world would anyone think you'd want the knock-off to have its logo large and shiny, as the center of attention? This is really unnecessary, and would make me seriously consider paying a few dollars more for one of the others.Details of the experiment:One each of HappyGo, ZMG, and Swig Savvy bottles (all brand new), one Swell bottle (9 months old). I filled all 4 bottles with 15oz of cold water, and 3 ice cubes. My instant-read digital thermometer measuredeach of them at 51.0° F when the experiment started. I placed them outside in the 78° morning heat (the high that day reached 92), in a location where they would receive both sun and shade during the day. I decided upfront that final temperature differences of less than 1° F would be ignored, as they could be caused by one of many different factors.2.5 hours later (86° outside temperature)Swell: 53.2°HappyGo: 51.7°ZMG: 51.7°Swig Savvy: 51.2°I rotated the positions of the bottles, to prevent any kind of hot spots.4 hours later (6.5 hours total time elapsed, 88° outside temperature):Swell: 60.4°HappyGo: 59.9°ZMG: 59.7°Swig Savvy: 58.4°I rotated the bottles again.1.5 hours later (8 hours total time elapsed, 86° outside temperature):Swell: 62.4°HappyGo: 60.8°ZMG: 61.4°Swig Savvy: 60.6°As you can see, the off-brand bottles did every bit as well as the Swell, maybe even better. They all finished within 1° of each other, and were actually colder than the Swell. I do think the age (and daily use) of the Swell caused it to not do quite as well, so I believe that needs to be taken into account. But price doesn’t seem to be a factor in performance whatsoever. The fact is, these cheaper bottles performed at least as well as the name-brand bottle that cost 3-4x as much. After all that, the ~61° water was still much cooler than cold water from the sink. I don't think I have any choice but to give all of these bottles 5 stars. They each do the same job just as well as, if not better than, the high-dollar Swell.

Good bottle!
Good bottle. Keeps the drink cold or hot for hours on end. This is my 2nd bottle in this size. Great for coffee!
