It's about speed, not the wheelchair
This was my son's favorite book when he was 3. It was the first book he asked to get from the library twice. He memorized most of the words, which isn't something he usually does. He isn't in a wheelchair, and he didn't know anyone in a wheelchair at the time. He just liked and still likes speed. I'd recommend for any kid who likes cars, trucks trains and going fast.

Loved this book!
I have worked with kids with special needs during my entire career and I love to see books like this. Using a wheelchair is not the main focus, but being a kid with a 'need for speed' is! Well done, Robert Munsch! And the pictures are a very special treat! It has become a favorite of my grand kids ranging in age from 10 to 2.

Not one of his best, but still pretty funny
So, our main character wants a new wheelchair. So they go to this WONDERFULLY awesome wheelchair store and she immediately chooses not the five speed chair, nor the seven speed chair with purple wheels, but the NINETY-THREE (or whatever) speed wheelchair. And gets a ticket for speeding. But before her parents can take her chair away and get her a slower one, her brother pricks his finger just a little bit and she has to rush him to the hospital (all the time muttering that her family is insane, but hey - BLOOD!)In the end, she decides that she needs an even faster wheelchair, and we see her on the last page in this improbable monster truck of a wheelchair on the highway. Awesome! Now, the first bit of good is the attitude taken in regards to her disability. There's no explicit moral message given. We're not condescendingly told she's a normal child - we're shown she's normal (at least, as normal as it gets within the bounds of a Munsch book!) and her wheelchair is THE COOLEST THING EVER.The second good thing is the story itself. It has nothing to do with wheelchairs at all. Her need for speed could have just as easily been satisfied through having an able-bodied child on a dirt bike or a sled. It's just a funny, silly story about a kid going super fast.It doesn't grab me as much as Munsch's other books, and I'm not sure why, but it's still head and shoulders over most picture books with disabled protagonists. DEFINITELY get this one for your home or school.

Made the PERFECT gift
This summer I volunteered as a story reader at a children's museum. While doing research for books about wheels, I found this amazing story. Immediately I said "THIS IS ANNIE!" I called her up that day and said "I can't wait until Christmas! I just found your Christmas present!" How hard it was waiting, but she is so hard to get the perfect gift for that I wasn't going to waste that opportunity. Sometimes though I would have little doubts about whether she'd like it. I didn't want it to be like "hey, since you're in a wheelchair, here's a book about a girl in a wheelchair." But it was SO Annie! Then I would think "Well, maybe she's outgrown that "need for speed" thing, and it's too childish a book for a 32-year-old. Most of the time though, my doubt was just "It's so HER that surely she has already read it by now."Well, Christmas finally arrived, and all my doubts were unfounded. After she opened it up I read it out loud to her (just because I love story-reading, and you're never too old to be read to). She had never seen the book before, never even heard of it. She, and her entire family agreed that it was as if the book was written just for her. By the last couple of pages she was laughing so hard that I had to read louder so that she could still hear me. I was worried that she might hyperventilate--really. Lorretta's last words always bring the biggest laugh, (or so you think), until you turn the page, and the final picture brings an even bigger one.Well written. Very funny illustrations. Now I want a copy for myself. Maybe next Christmas.

I will mention this particular edition is just a great size and graphic quality for reading at bedtime
What can you say. It's a Munsch book. I will mention this particular edition is just a great size and graphic quality for reading at bedtime, very easy to actually read in low light (if you need glasses also), and pictures (in great detail) also large enough to really enjoy. We will be looking for similar editions for other Munsch books.
