Unhulled sesame seeds at an excellent price
These are UNHULLED sesame seeds.I purchased these primarily to make homemade tahini, for the ultimate purpose of making homemade hummus. As soon as they arrived in my mailbox yesterday, I proceeded with the recipe and was not disappointed. It didn't go as expected; seldom does anything I do go that way the first time! But the results were outstanding! Homemade tahini and hummus is the way to go if you have the time to spend and own the right appliances. This is important to know: there are two ways you can buy sesame seeds: hulled and unhulled. Those are confusing terms and could be misinterpreted, so to be precise, "hulled" really means "dehulled," in other words, the hulls have been removed by a pretty extensive process involving soaking, chemicals, and physical removal of the hulls. "Unhulled" means they still have the hulls intact and never went through the dehulling process.Unhulled seeds (this product) are smaller, darker in color, tougher, and a bit more bitter than the hulled (dehulled) sesame seeds that you normally find on hamburger buns, bagels, and in the spice section of your supermarket. Most people would prefer hulled seeds (NOT this product) for most applications.I found these to be desirable due to their great value. I paid $9.99 for a one kilogram package with free Prime shipping. At a penny per gram, that's pretty hard to beat. It's easier to process sesame seeds in your food processor or blender if they've been (de)hulled (again, NOT this product). Hulled seeds will break down into tahini much more quickly; these required 3-4 times as long, and never liquified the way hulled seeds would.BUT...I used these to make tahini, which then just stayed in the food processor as I added the garbanzo beans, lemon juice, aquafaba, etc. and continued to process into a fantastic, delicious hummus that's the best my wife and I have ever had. It was smoother than any we've ever bought in a store. We also just sprinkled some on homemade bagels this morning before they went into the oven. My wife made a small batch, and sprinkled some with sesame seeds out of a spice can from the supermarket (hulled), and as an experiment, she sprinkled two with this product (unhulled). Honestly if you weren't aware there was a difference, you might not notice. I could kind of tell when I tried to, but it really didn't matter. So, my verdict: I'm extremely happy with Yupik Natural Raw Sesame Seeds. To be able to buy 1 kg, i.e., 2.2 pounds, for $9.99 with free shipping is a very good value, a small fraction of what it would cost to buy the equivalent amount of sesame seeds in the supermarket spice section. They do what I want them to do, which is primarily to make tahini/hummus, but now we know they also work fine sprinkled on bread products as well.If you need hulled sesame seeds, this isn't for you, and I'm sure Amazon has many listings of those as well. You'll pay more for them, but if you don't want the hulls, then that's the way to go.
