Hellboy: The Complete Short Stories Volume 2

Hellboy's various one shot and short story adventures are collected in a second volume that presents a look at the day to day life of the demonic BPRD paranormal investigator. The short stories tangentially tie in to the various major story arcs that are collected in the four big omnibuses and it is this second volume that contains some of the most "important" stories Mignola developed. Many of the short stories are referenced in the main "series" but some of the major ones are here in the second volume. The biggest is probably the story of Hellboy's first interaction with the Baba Yaga (the classical mythical witch of Russia). Hellboy gets into a scrap with Baba Yaga and while she escapes he manages to shoot out one of her eyes; the character would later return throughout the main story arcs first as a supporter to Rasputin and then as a primary antagonist of the Wild Hunt omnibus. All in all Mignola's world was so vast and engaging that anyone who enjoys the Hellboy or BPRD series will get a kick out of this great collection.

Hellboy has great stories and even better art. Mignola is at the top of his game with his personal creation. And even his occasional artist collaborators are top notch veterans. The mood and flavor of these books are so refreshing. Imagine calling gothic refreshing? That's Mignola's Hellboy for you.

This second chronological order compilation of all the Hellboy short stories obviously carries on where the first left off, and does exactly the same job. I didn't enjoy this one quite so much, partly because there were fewer (if any) stories that I hadn't already read (or remembered reading), and partly because there was less of Richard Corben's art in this volume, and while that often meant more Mignola, I do like Mr. Corben's work. Still, overall good value for what it does.
